Are You Really That Important?

Think about that question for just a minute if you would.

This world has billions of people in it, and that number grows every day.Yet most of us believe the world revolves around us, and only us.

I would probably bet that if you look at history and studied all of the wars and all of the crimes, that they all began with selfishness....It may have been presented in the form of jealousy, it may have been presented in the form of hatred, it may have even been presented in the form of love. But at the root of it all there is selfishness nonetheless.

Allow me to explain.

Presented in the form of jealousy: This one is pretty self explanatory. If you are jealous of something then you obviously want to have it as your own. This makes it all about you. There is a term for that. Selfish.

Presented in the form of hatred: First of all the fact that you hate someone makes it clear enough that they have done something that displeases you. Its all about you. Once again the term for that is selfish. But of course I am sure that you were completely right about everything...right?

I am sure that you always do whats right, after all you are human, and everyone knows that humans are perfect in every way. There is nothing like wars and pollution and crime to vouch for humanity's perfection.

Please...give me a break.

Presented in the form of love: "I loved her so much that I killed that man so she would be mine." Has this ever happened before? I can't tell you for sure, but I am pretty positive that it has. The world today is twisted by greed and selfishness, and it causes people to do many horrific things. Wether it be killing a man because you think that, by doing so, you can get a girl, or robbing a bank so you can be rich and have everything you want, or something else, it all proves one thing.

The world is going to hell....fast.

I am sure that this is not news to you, and if it is I am sure you are not surprised by it. But if you are, I don't see why. If you would just watch the news one night (and if you want to keep your sanity then watch it for one and only one night) you will see it in every story reported, but lets get back to my point...

You are not that important.

You are one human, in a world of billions of humans. The world does not revolve around you. The world was fine (except for what the humans did to it) without you here before you were born. So I am sure that it would be fine without you in it now too. The universe will continue to revolve without you in it.

Now don't misunderstand what I am saying. You need to value your life, and you need to treat yourself with respect. Do NOT take this as an excuse to get depressed and star cutting yourself....or commit suicide....or whatever other deranged ideas come to your mind.

My basic point in all of this is that you have no right to believe that you are better than anyone else. We are all human, we are all sinners, we will all die. You are not so important that this rule does not apply to you.

So, in summary, quit bragging on yourself, quit trying to make yourself more important than others, and just enjoy life without the unnecessary "feeling" of importance. Because when it all comes to an end....

Are you really that important?

Ah, so it sounds like you're beginnning to understand the concept of total depravity and the hopelessness of our own good works because they are ALWAYS tainted with self! Would have been a pefect sequeway into the presentation of the Gospel, young man!

A little Spurgeon, on that note:

"Looking unto Jesus."
Hebrews 12:2

It is ever the Holy Spirit's work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan's work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, "Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of his children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus." All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within.

But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: he tells us that we are nothing, but that "Christ is all in all."

Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument-it is Christ's blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by "looking unto Jesus." Keep thine eye simply on him; let his death, his sufferings, his merits, his glories, his intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to him; when thou liest down at night look to him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after him, and he will never fail thee.

"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness:
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name."
